(US) Braided Winter Love Slouch

To match my braided scarf..a braided slouchy hat!

It work up pretty fast. And it's easier than it looks! The pattern is in US terminologie. My yarn matches a 4mm and 5mm hook. You will need a size H (5mm) and J (6mm) crochet hook, scissors and tapestry needle. I used two toiletpaper rolls to make my big pompom. Let's get crocheting!

The braid;

Start bij chaining 66 with your J hook( 6mm), switch to your H hook(5mm), double crochet in the 4th chain from the hook, double crochet till the end. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Make 8 strands.

Click here for a video tutorial for connecting the strands and making the braid.

Connect the strands bij inserting your hook in the first chain (of the starting chain3) on top of the strand.

Single crochet into the first chain, skip 1 chain, single crochet into de last chain.
Single crochet into the first chain of the next strand, skip 1 ch, single crochet in the last chain. Repeat until you connected all 8 strands. Fasten off.

Now let's start braiding!

Devide your strand into two groups of 4.

The outher strand on the left side wil always go 'over, under, over'.

Now you have 3 strands on the left side and 5 on the right side.
The outher strand on the right side will always go 'under, over, under, over'.

Try to braid them as tight as possible. Repeat the two steps to the end.

I made 17 braid rows. (count the outher strand 'waves')
When you are done braiding, you can crochet the ends together, just like we did when we connected the strands in the beginning. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Turn your work and single crochet the beginning and end of the braid together.
DON'T FASTEN OFF!

Chain 1 and half double crochet in the first double crochet of the braid, hdc in the next 3. Take the next strand of the braid and make a hdc in the next 4 stitches. Repeat till you reach the end. Slip stitch into the first hdc you made.

Chain 1, hdc into the same stitch. Hdc around, slip stitch into the first hdc you made ( repeat for 14 more rows, 16 rows total.)

After you finished the 16 hdc rows, it's time to fasten off. LEAVE A LONG TAIL, so you can sew the top together.
With your tapestry needle, go over a stitch and under a stitch all the way around. When you reach the beginning you can gently tighten it to close the top of your slouch. Weave in the ends.

Turn your work. Join in the stitch where you connected the braid.

Chain 1 and half double crochet in the first double crochet of the braid, hdc in the next 3. Take the next strand of the braid and make a hdc in the next 4 stitches. Repeat till you reach the end. Slip stitch into the first hdc you made.
Repeat for another 3 rows.

Chain1 and turn your work. Hdc into the same stitch.
BACKLOOPS ONLY, hdc till the end. Slip stitch in the first hdc you made.

Chain1 and hdc in the same stitch, hdc around till the end, slip stitch into the first hdc you made. Repeat for one more row.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Time to make a pompom! You can attach it on top of your slouch.

Enjoy!
